RICH HISTORY

From Railroad Hub to Rural Retreat

The community of Sharpsburg was originally founded in 1825, and officially incorporated on December 13, 1871. Its initial city limits extended a quarter-mile radius from the former depot of the Savannah, Griffin, and North Alabama Railroad, which is now the Central of Georgia Railroad. The town was named in honor of Judge Elias Sharp, an early resident who played a pivotal role in its incorporation.

Following its incorporation, Sharpsburg experienced a period of steady population growth, driven by its agricultural economy. The town became a hub for agriculturally oriented services, with cotton gins and warehouses flourishing near the railroad. Various professional services, including doctors, blacksmith shops, a drug store, and a bank, also thrived, catering to the expanding populace into the early 1900s.

The Great Depression in the 1920s marked a significant turning point for Sharpsburg. The decline in the importance of cotton and other agricultural crops, coupled with increasing agricultural mechanization, led to a decrease in demand for labor. This prompted a migration of residents to larger cities in search of employment, resulting in a population decline throughout the 1930s.

However, beginning in 1940, Sharpsburg's population began a slow but steady increase, a trend that has continued to the present day. The town has since evolved, balancing its rich historical roots with a growing community, offering a blend of rural tranquility and accessibility to modern conveniences.
