RICH HISTORY
From Lafayette's Legacy to Modern Marvel
LaGrange, Georgia, established in 1828, was meticulously planned with a downtown street grid that remains largely unchanged today. Named by Colonel Julius Caesar Alford after the Marquis de Lafayette's estate in France, the city quickly grew into a significant center in west central Georgia. Its early economy was bolstered by skilled enslaved laborers, contributing to Troup County becoming one of Georgia's wealthiest. The city also prioritized education, establishing several colleges and early public schools for both Black and white students.
During the Civil War, LaGrange served as a Confederate hospital zone and refugee center, experiencing the direct impact of the conflict. A notable local defense group, the Nancy Harts, comprised of women, formed to protect the home front. In 1865, Union forces briefly occupied the town, leading to the destruction of industrial and transportation infrastructure. Despite these setbacks, LaGrange quickly began to rebuild and re-establish itself as a regional hub.
The late 19th and early 20th centuries marked a period of industrial growth for LaGrange, particularly in cotton manufacturing, with local investors driving the expansion. The arrival of new railroads further solidified its position as a commercial center. This industrialization spurred the development of essential city services, including utilities, public safety departments, and paved streets. LaGrange also gained national recognition for its significant contributions to Liberty Loan Bond Drives during World War I.
Following World War II, LaGrange experienced renewed growth and industrial diversification, attracting numerous Fortune 1000 firms. The Callaway Foundation played a crucial role in enhancing the city's quality of life, contributing to a rich array of amenities such as art galleries, a symphony orchestra, and various recreational centers. The city has received accolades for its innovation and quality of life, including the Intelligent City of the Year award, and continues to foster international relationships through its sister city programs.
